Participants are encouraged to bring in a variety of their own recycled papers to experiment with. University of Maryland Professor Barry Pearson has been studying African-American Music for more than 30 years, and has recently released a cd compilation, Classic African-American Ballads, with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Come learn about this mesmerizing song tradition!

Local volunteer will lead a traditional German celebration culminating in an outdoor walk with festive paper lanterns which we'll make out of posterboard and colorful wax paper, plus whatever sparkly accoutrement you care to add on. Your family will love this annual tradition, and your lanterns will be an enduring keepsake! This event will take place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 4512 College Avenue, College Park.

The College Park Youth Orchestra will perform its Fall Concert at Hyattsville Middle School, 6001 42nd Ave. in Hyattsville. Click here for a map.

The program will include six pieces, including Vivaldi's Concerto alla Rustica and Corelli's Christmas Concerto.

The concert is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served at a reception following the concert.

Riverdale Presbyterian will be hosting several wonderful groups of young musicians, including the College Park Youth Choir, Eleanor Roosevelt High School Clarinet Choir, Concordia Middle School, and Jazz Trio. As groups move on and off the staging area, the audience will be led in singing Christmas Carols. Following the concert, there will be a reception with soup and bread , cookies and drinks in Custis Hall, the downstairs fellowship hall. Performers and their families are encouraged to come and share some soup and mingle with other performers and audience members. The University Park town tree lighting will follow at 6:00 pm, a couple of blocks walk up Queens Chapel Rd. from the church.
